"As I've talked about in earlier commands, dogs have no conceptual concept of time, but I would like every command to be held for three to five seconds so they retain the information that you're training them. With the "leave it" command, when you practice this "leave it" command, bait the dog, down on one knee, lightly hold the collar. Place the command approximately a foot and a half from the dog, wait three to five seconds. As I've mentioned, I want you to determine if it's okay for the dog to eat whatever they have approached. If they cannot eat it, it's going to give you time to grab the item and say, "good, leave it." As mentioned, three to five seconds is a good time frame just to connect with the dog what you're actually looking to get them to do."
