"Lightly hold the collar is important to making a strong connection with your dog. As I mentioned in the previous segment, it illustrates to your dog that they're submissive and you are alpha. I'm sure a lot of you can relate who may have toy dogs. If you have never had a collar on your dog before, it becomes increasingly harder as they age to put a collar on them, mixed with if you hold them by the collar, they're going to tend to get more excitable. I also let customers know that, in the wild, it is certainly normal for an alpha dog to hold a puppy or a submissive dog by the scruff fatty tissue on their neck. I often administer light corrections this way, by grabbing the collar or the scruff and holding lightly. I'm certainly not condoning any rough tugs, but I certainly mimic what would happen in a wild dog pack, which is a light hold on the collar. Good sit."
