"Hold dog for 3 to 5 seconds can be used in the "stay" command as well. After you've addressed the dog with "tin man", bait, apply your hand stop sign for stay, take your step back, hold for three to five seconds. Like I've said in previous commands, the three to five seconds is vital for calmness and to link with the goal of the command. After you've held for three to five seconds, you can treat your dog. As you find your dog picks up the command better, it doesn't always have to be that long, but there might be times, like I said earlier, in the kitchen or the front door or crossing the street that the dog may have to be held for more than three to five seconds. So, it's just good for them to get in a routine and repetition that that will be the minimum amount of time that they actually have to be held. "
