"Drop it is another thing that comes in really handy and the way that you would teach drop it is to get them interested in a toy. Get the baby, he's not going to do it today. Go get the baby, let it go, go get it, go. Get it, go get it, get it, good boy! Bring it here. And you want a dog to drop. That's the end result of drop is is to get him to spit it out as he comes back. To teach drop it you want him to go get a toy. Once you get the toy, you want to grab on to the toy and put a treat right under their nose. They have their choice of either hanging on to the toy or getting a treat. 90% of the dogs would rather have food than a toy unless you have a high motivated, toy driven dog. So it's throw the toy, get him back to you. Tell him drop and he drops ahead of time, you still want to say drop because of the fact that he's doing what we ask. You just want to catch it in the action. If I get him with the toy, come on get the toy, good boy! And ask him to drop. If he doesn't let go right away, stick your treat there. You should start seeing that he releases the treat or the toy a little bit each time. And now I tell him drop and he is starting to let go which is a progression that you want to see. Once he is letting go on his own you can start taking the treats away and throwing the toy as a reward instead of using the food."
