"Hi, I'm Jim Leske, animal trainer and behaviorist for Expert Village. Have you ever heard the expression you can't teach an old dog new tricks? I'm here to tell you differently. Take my good friend, Bear, here. When he was rescued, I can't tell you how many people told me you will never do this, you will never do that, or you can't rehabilitate a German Shepherd, you can't do this and you can't do that. One of the other kind of things I always heard is he'll never be off leash in a dog park. Look at him now! He's off leash in a dog park. He's very well behaved, he works on TV and film, and he's a very social animal. It just goes to show you, animal training is more about the humans than it is about the dogs. Some of the other myths that we want to address is that dogs are too young or too old to learn or be trained. Another one that we hear quite frequently is that if I spay or neuter my pet they're going to get fat. The truth is that lack of exercise causes a dog to be obese. Also, giving him human food puts on the pounds very quickly, and that's the best way to get them to stop eating dog food. Another one I hear all the time is that they have to have their first litter before you can spay them. That's no further from the truth than I could possibly tell you. Also, neutering male dogs will not stunt their growth. There's no truth to that rumor whatsoever. Remember, animal training is mostly about you and not your dog. And with that, there's no such thing as they're too old, too young, or this breed won't do this, or that breed won't do that. With that, I want to leave you and remember that dog training can be a fun and enjoyable experience for both you and your dog, but you have to get off the couch. I'm Jim Leske for Expert Village."
