"Hi, I'm Jim Leske, animal trainer for Expert Village. Today we're working on dog training tips and right now we're going to work on what's called stand and stay. Stand and stay comes in very handy because inevitably you're going to one day take your dog to the vet or the groomer and stand and stay is much more beneficial for the vet and the groomer than down or sit is. So in this case, Bear is already standing so all I'm going to do is called capturing the moment. I'm giving him the treat, I'm petting him, I'm telling him what a good dog he is and so he helps understand that stand is very very different from a sit or a down or a stay or anything like that. Now sometimes your dog is going to be already in a sit position and so when that happens, all I'm going to do is put the treat right in front of his nose. I'm going to take my empty hand, lift him up right by the breast plate, lift him gently but firmly into the stand and tell him what a good boy he is. Very good, stand. Now, after we've mastered this, I'm going to move on to what's called stand for exam. I'm going to extend this a little bit and all I'm doing is making that petting in all the usual as well as the not so usual places is a good thing. So here I'm doing, this is just an every day pet, everything normal, then I sneak in something a little different, back to the normal, something a little bit different. I'm examining the pads of his feet, something normal, a little different, something normal, a little different, very good boy. Here's back to normal and here's something different right here, very good boy. Back to the normal petting and then I examine the teeth, very very good boy and that's stand for exam. When we come back we're going to work a little bit on what's called the finish. And we'll talk more about the finish after this."
