How to Train a Dog to Sit

"Hi, I'm Jim Leske, animal trainer with Expert Village and today we're talking about basic commands, specifically the sit. The sit is the foundation of all dog training. Everything we build upon is built upon the sit so this is one of the basic commands we start off with and this is Bear, he's going to help me out today. As you see, he's got the sit down quite well. Not all dogs are going to be this willing. That's a good boy. So as an example when we're working with Bear, the idea here is I take my food reward and I just tip right up and the nose follows the treat where it is and you see the nose goes up, the butt goes down and good sit, good sit, good sit, very good boy. Now sometimes they're a little stubborn, up, good boy, very good boy, very good boy, very good boy, and when that happens, just a little push on the butt goes a long way and good sit, good sit, good boy. Repetition is what's going to get you there. Positive reinforcement is going to help tremendously but remember practice, practice, practice. So with that, we're going to wrap this one up.
