I'm Carlos Puentes with K-9 Solutions Dog Training in Miami, Florida, and today we're going to talk about dog training myths from my new book, Who's Training Whom? Myth number 4: My dog knows when he did something wrong. Wrong. Dogs don't do things because they know they shouldn't do them. They do them anyway and then once they did it, " That was wrong, I shouldn't have done that." That's a people problem. In other words, dogs do things because they know they shouldn't do them and then do them anyway. The only reason the dog will continue doing something that the owner doesn't want him to do is because it's rewarding for the animal. If it's negative for him he's not going to want to do it. He's not a masochist. That's another people problem. Although the owner figures that he's taught the dog the lesson that that's no good for him, the only reason that he'll keep doing it is because it's actually rewarding for him and he hasn't been taught the lesson that it's negative. For example, you come home from work and you notice your dog tore something up. You bring him to it and you tell him, "No, bad boy! Why do you do that? No." Basically what that does is it teaches them whenever my owner gets close to these things, that's when it's negative for me. They didn't teach the dog that the act of tearing things up is wrong.
