" Hi! This is Elise McMahon for Expert Village and today we are talking about how to teach your dog a reliable stay. If you would like to find out more about my services, you can visit my website at canineheadstart.com. So we are going to be talking now about generalizing the stay. Come here Ursa, this way… sit… down… I am going to work with her in a down stay. Ursa stay… Notice that the distance is very close between her and the chair. I am going to start to sit down. The dog is holding the stay. I am going to get up… reward… and ask her to stay. Notice I haven’t released her. I am just going to increase the duration a little bit. Always we start by increasing… the dog got up, put them back in their position, stay, that is a sign to me that I increased duration too long for this dog for this exercise. Good girl… Okay good job. Now we are going to just increase distance a little bit and I will change the position. Ursa sit, good girl… stay… good girl… stay… good girl… okay, good job baby. So I worked both on increasing distance and duration doing it gradually. When the dog gets up from the position that you have asked them to and of course it is going to happen sometimes, you need to immediately get them back into the position that you had put them in and start over again. Don’t use a lot of harsh corrections because we don’t want to stress the dog out when we are working. You just a matter of factly bring them back and place them back in this position and start working from a lower point so maybe less time less distance. "
