on 12/4/2008 Just a complementary remark to Elise's fantastically helpful video clip. whenever going around a curve..make sure you are neveer bewtween the judge and the dog. So that means there are times you may have to switch hands and sides of the dog depending on where the judge is located. In this clip it was hypothetically supposed that the judge was off to the left..so when going around the corner at the end you must switch hands so that the dog so the handler is not bewteen the judge and the dog. The movement of the dog must be in clear view of the judge from the side.

"Hi this Elise from Expert Village.com and in this short video clip we are going to be talking about how to teach your dog to gait for the confirmation show ring. This is Tai and he actually has already finished his AKC championship but he is going to help us out today in teaching a dog how to gait. So we got our show collar and leash on and have it correctly placed on the dog’s neck, we are going to walk back and forth teaching a dog how to gait from one end of the room to the other. This way Tai. Stand and wait. In the confirmation show ring, your dog is always standing. There is absolutely no reason for him to be sitting so you want to get your dog very comfortable with the concept of a stand, stay or stand wait. We start off with the dog on our left hand side. The judges always judging the dog from the dog’s left, so we are on the dog’s right. Now I am just going to be moving the dog up and down. I want him to be following me and paying attention to me to start with. Tai, let’s go. This way. Let’s go and wait. Okay, good job! So I want the dog to move along with me. One thing that is very important working and gaiting your dog is to know what is the best speed that your dog can move at and what is the best speed that you can move out. You often want to start out slowly, this way and move up to a quicker pace. Going slow enough on corners the dogs know what you want him to do. Tai, let’s go, slowly, speed up, slowly, speed up and wait. Good job. Good boy! In future videos we are going to be talking about some of the shapes you have to do in a show ring like going on the down and back and doing the triangle. I hope you join us then. "
