Have Reasonable Expectations for Housebreaking a Dog: Part 2

"Hi this is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com and in this video series we are talking about house training your dog. So we are going to be talking again about reasonable expectations but here we are talking about your expectations with an adult dog. A lot of times people will adopt an adult dog where they will find an adult dog and it is possible that that dog was not house trained in its previous home. For example if you get a greyhound that is off the track, they have not lived in homes before. They’ve lived in kennels. Often times you might adopt a little dog from a breeder and it was a kennel dog. So you might find yourself in a position that you have an older dog that you assume is going to be house broken and able to hold it for 8 hours and they are not able to do that. So how do we go about house training a dog that physically is capable of holding it for a long period of time but mentally does not have the grasp and understanding that they are supposed to. We are going to use the same methods in house breaking an older dog that we would use in house breaking a puppy using confinement and gradual exposure to, there’s Raven attacking her half-sister, gradual exposure to more and more parts of the house. With an older dog, remember that although they can hold it for longer; they don’t know they need to and that is what we need to teach them. We need to do that in the same method that we would do as teaching a puppy. "
