"On behalf of Expert Village, I'm Carl Puentes with K-9 Solutions in Miami, Florida and today I am going to show you dog training techniques from my new book, "Who is training Whom. Okay when you bring your puppy home or your dog that hasn't been leashed broken, that is the first thing you want to do. You want to make sure you allow the puppy to actually put tension on the leash and let him go wherever he pleases. They don't want the second strongest muscle in their body being in control so what they are going to do is if you do this, they are going to do this. So let him walk around, let him wear it and then you can start picking him up and you can use a ball, favorite toy, a treat. You an throw the ball and allow the dog to go after it. His first experience on the leash is great. In other words, he controls the leash. Another way of doing it is with food. Get a piece of food and let him go after it. If you tug too much on it, he will just shut down. So you want to make sure that you actually let him pull you a little bit and he learns that he can control that leash once you get the dog walking and then you get then to walk the way you want him to walk.
