"I am Charlie McCanna, and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I would like to speak to you today little bit about obedience training. I brought my buddy Heidi along for the purposes of showing you this, and what we are going to talk about today first includes collars, the leads and a little bit of commands. Different types of collars: you have a choke collar, which simply goes over their head and as you pull on it; it tightens up around their neck. Another collar that is very good is called a pinch collar. This one has little spikes, may seem cruel but it’s very, very easy on the dog. And you simply put the collar around the dog’s neck, and when you pull up on the collar it will pinch into their neck and it will help to control them. You can also use this kind of lead, which is simple. You can get them at any veterinarian and you can get them at any pet store, but regardless of that, the simplest thing is, as I said, the simple choke collar. When you have their collar on, you want to keep the dog on a short lead. You want to start walking them; always use your left foot first, the foot that is closest to the dog. For instance…heel…and when you stop you want your dog to stop. If your dog doesn’t stop, you need to find a way to teach it to. I like to have a long lead, and when I stop, I will take the lead and I will pop Heidi on the rear. She will sit anyway, but a young puppy will not. Heidi heel. Now, you really are not going to hurt them, but people think it might, but that obviously did not bother Heidi a bit. Heidi heel. Repetition is the key; you have to do this over and over and over and over. Don’t let the dog get away from you. If you have trouble with the dog pulling or trying to drag you down the street, get a pinch collar. A little tug on the pinch collar or a choke collar will slow them down quickly, and then you will have control. That will get you started on heeling."
