"Hi! This is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com and in this video series we are talking about house training your dog. If you would like to find out more about my services, you can visit my website at canineheadstart.com. So in this video clip we are going to be talking about gradually increasing the amount of space that your dog has access to in your house. If you are working with a puppy, as your puppy is getting older and they are getting more reliable, then you can start to gradually allow them access to more parts of the house. Let’s say your puppy has not had free access to anything but one room and that’s the room where their crate is in and that’s the room you hang out with your puppy. When you start to increase the amount of space, you are going to be quite vigilant about monitoring your dog when they are in that area and also another important thing to do is to interact with your dog in all areas of your house before you expose them to that area. So I am going to give you an example. Let’s say you have a guest room that is off on the second floor at the end of the house and you never go in there. Before you allow your puppy access to that guest room, you would need to go into that room, play with the puppy in that room, feed him a meal in that room, give him a bone to chew in that room while you are there in presence. Take him out of that room. Do that a couple of times before they are allowed free access to that room. The idea here is if a puppy needs to go and let’s say he is upstairs and doesn’t think of going downstairs and telling the person who is in the house that he needs to go, they are going to go to the room that is the farthest away and they are going to use that as the potty. Once they get behavior in there, they are going to start using that room as a potty regularly. You want to let them know yes indeed this room is part of the house so you are going to be gradually increasing the amount of space that your dog has access to. Again, now let’s think of talking about an adult dog. An adult dog, you are going to be able to increase that space much quicker than you would with a puppy. "
