on 8/2/2008 Being the owner of several bird dogs and working with a rescue group, I was excited to find this clip in hopes of being able to share with the members of our group. Unfortunately, after viewing, I was upset to see the harsh methods used for teaching a behavior as simple as sit. While I don't deny that dogs can learn through fear based methods, I don't feel it is fair to teach a dog this way. Using a food lure or even a gentler physical manipulation (hand on the hind end) followed by praise or a treat for sitting will achieve the same results. You will have a dog that is motivated and happy to work. You can see Heidi flinch as she is being whipped to elicit the sit. For a shy or fearful dog, this method could be damaging to them and their relationship with their handler. They could shut down, refuse to work, or even start to show aggression.

"Hi! I am Charlie McCanna, and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I have brought along my pal Heidi to demonstrate the command sit. Heidi is an expert hunter, master retriever, but I think she will suffice for this demonstration. I brought a long a switch. I would like to use a crop, but I don’t have one handy today, you can also use a long lead and use the back end as a slightly a whip. Puppies are a lot more difficult. Obviously Heidi knows what she is doing, but we are going to see if we can demonstrate this. I am going to walk towards the camera and as I walk I am going to use the command sit and then I will pop her on the rear and she will sit. You can do that with your dog and you need to do that with your dog. When you are out walking, you give them a command, and until you get that command down pat, just give him a little quick pop on the tail just like you would with a child, and they will get it down pat very quickly. sit… And as you see she sat and I kept on going. Heidi here, sit… and pretty quickly she realizes that when I hear that word sit, I got to be putting my rear-end down or I am going to get a little pop on the tail… here."
