"Hi! I am Charlie McCanna, and on behalf of Expert Village.com, I am going to talk to you a little bit about retriever training. I have brought my pal Heidi along with me. Now Heidi is a master hunter, but I think we can still go back to basics, and maybe she will do some of the things that she did as a puppy, so that I can kind of explain from the beginning what you need to do. When you get a puppy, as soon as possible, you need to do what we call throwing happy bumpers for them. You want to play with that dog a bunch, and that puppy will very quickly realize that every time you throw that bumper they go get it and bring it back. At first they are going to run off with it, but you go grab it, and after a while they are going to figure out, hey every time he throws that thing I get to bring it back. You want to build up the love of retrieval. Heidi sit. Another thing you would like to do is have feathers. You want the dog smell feathers and learn that feathers coincide with birds. Puppies will enjoy the heck out of it, you don’t want them to chew it up too much, but as I said lots of happy bumpers, lots of fun fetching can keep your dog excited."
