"We're going to teach you how to use a signal sit to have your dog sit. The first you're going to do, using a signal is to have control over your leash. I'm going to take the leash with my right hand, out of my left, leaving the same amount of distance from my collar to my hand. I'm going to use a hand signal like salt going over your shoulder, "sit." As you can see, nothing happened at that time. I'm going to have my leash across my body, an upward motion, and with my hand closest to the dog, I'm going to use this as a guide. You never push on the dog's hips, this is simply a guide. As soon as the dog sits, and is in position, you lower the leash to take the pressure off the collar. That is taking the place of using your lure or your treat. The dog gets up. Once again, without using the command, I'm going to place him and then lower the leash once again. This teaches the dog to stay in position for a long time and not to get up until you release him."
