Series Summary

Wine tasting is a full sensory evaluation of wine. Wine tasters enjoy the taste, but also the aroma, color, dryness, sweetness and tint of wine. They can understand and detect the many complexities of the wines that they taste. Wine tastings are often held at wineries, events or at private parties. There is a specific order of tasting as heavier wines can dominate the taste and other elements of the lighter wines. Also, certain foods can be served that will influence or compliment the flavor of the wine like cheese, fruits, chocolates and meats.

After watching this series of expert videos, you will learn how to determine the different tastes and aromas of wines. Learn how to pair foods with red and white wines. Get expert advice on storing and buying wine. Our expert explains the factors that determine the price of a vintage bottle of wine. See step-by-step instructions on wine tasting including swishing wine in the mouth, smelling the wine, swirling the wine in the cup and tasting the flavors of the wine. Our expert explains the importance of wine glasses, the history of different grapes and the varietal differences in various types of wines. on 8/2/2008 Videos are weak on information. Expert says a lot of words but conveys very little information. For instance: Wine Glasses - the expert mentions that the shape of the glass is very important but the only information conveyed is that the stem prevents wine from heating; nothing about how the shape of the glass affects the enjoyment of the wine. Finally, author uses hmmm, ummmm, uhhhh a lot when descriptive words would communicate more information.

Video Transcript

"I’m Terry Thomas. I’m here on ExpertVillage.com to bring you a little about the appreciation of wine. I’ve been actually interested, I’ve been on a fishing auto, a fan maybe even a nut about wine for almost 40 years, I have a degree in chemistry and I’ve been involved in the food industry all these years and wine was just a normal extension of this endeavor. Why wine? Well wine actually goes back before our recorded history and through these thousands of years while we have continued to improve on the processes, the quality and all, and I’ve often said that it’s not nice to fool mother nature but in some respects we have definitely improved on mother nature in really getting the most out of wines, eliminating a lot of the risk and the opportunities for bad wines and today we’re the beneficiaries of great technology of globalization and we have more wine and more excellent wine than we ever thought possible."
