Series Summary

Ice skates made of flattened animal bone were first used in prehistoric times to cross frozen bodies of water efficiently and conveniently. Today, skating is a great leisure activity and competitive sport. The animal bone has been traded in for metal blades and boots have been added instead of straps or thongs that were previously used to strap the skater to the skates. The metal blade allows the skater to glide on the ice easily, and if more friction is needed, the skater can dig in one of the blade’s edges as a sort of brake. By leaning and pushing, the skater can gracefully glide on the ice.

"Hi I'm Simon Fisher and I'm here in Clearwater Ice Arena in Sunny Clear, Florida. On behalf of Expert Village. One thing that is very important in finger skating is learning how to get up. That is the first thing that you should know so I'm going to show you how to sit on the ice and get up again. So basically you just sit down and you want to go on to both knees. Then bring one knee up and then you push off of one knee and that brings you right up. That is basically how to get down and sit on the ice and get up again. The importance of getting up off the ice again or how to know to get up the ice again is just in case you fall or if you are doing something and no body else is near to help you up. It is very important that you know how to do that properaly or you can fall backwards or hurt your tail bone or hurt something else. So it is really good to know that. "
