"Once you've dialed in your stern initiations, you're ready to start working on stern stalls. In a stern stall, I start with the stern initiation and use just enough power so that my bow stops right above my head. Once I get there, I want to be that axle of the wheel. I want my body to be floating right on the water so my boat can stay effortlessly above. I can do that by reaching my paddle out over my head. Then I have a lot of control over my forward motion or my back motion to keep my boat really balanced up in the air. The other thing I need to control is very similar to bow stalls. I need to control any slicing motion in my boat. If my stern end starts pulling this way, I need to do a stroke on the other side to bring it back. If my stern end starts moving that way, I need to do a stroke over here to bring my stern in back underneath me. If you're really balanced, you can even do this with your paddle against your chest, but you'll often find that's easier to start out reached above your head. "
