How to Tie Figure 8 Knots for Indoor Rock Climbing

"Hey guys! This is Danny Logan and on behalf of Expert Village, I'm here to talk about indoor rock climbing. Okay, in this scene, I'm going to be talking about one of the most essential knots in climbing that there is. We call this a figure eight knot. This is a typical knot that you'll see on most routes. It's just laying like this; it's not quite done. It's half-way done. As you see, it's a figure eight. So, to make this knot, what you are going to do...you get your rope and I'm going to just bring it over here and make a cross. Bring it up and over and through the hole. That's half of the figure eight. Once you get to this approach, you bring this over here to your harness. You notice this little loop right here. I'm going to go in it, up through here and bring this pretty close to my harness. This is very simple now. To complete the figure eight, I'm just going to follow this line right back through. I don't need to memorize anything; just follow the line. Then, you tighten it. That's a figure eight not. Most climbers will tell you to place a little bit longer of a tail right here, just in case, so it won't go through. Some will even tie a little safety knot around here just for safety; it's not necessary. This will hold you. That is a figure eight knot. "
