Competitive rowing is a sport where athletes race against one another in a single, double or quadruple seated boat on a body of water. The first actual recorded race was in 1715 and was called the Doggett's Coat and Badge; it is still held today in England. Today there are many different types of boat races that pit skill and stamina against one another in a dash to the finish line
All of the athletes that race must be in peak physical condition, and training is a very large part of that. The extensive workout regimen of a rower is intense: they may workout for years just to shave a few tenths of a second off of their time. In this free video series, learn some exercise tips for training on rowing machines and using health and fitness equipment. Our Canadian Olympic rower will show you how to get started, how to have the proper form and rowing technique and how to adjust the progress monitor for different types of rowing exercises.
"Hi there! I’m Anna-Marie; I’m a Canadian Olympic Rower. I’m here on behalf of expertvillage.com. Today we’re going to be talking about the rowing machine, which is also commonly known as a rowing ergometer, and, or an ergo. In this first clip, I’ll tell you a bit about the parts of the machine. To start off with, the machine has a slide; it’s this metal portion here. On the slide you’ll find the seat. These are called the footplates, okay. They have straps for your feet, which you can tighten up. This is called the handle of the erg. The handle, when the erg is at rest, should always be placed right up against the cage. This portion of the machine is the monitor. In the back is where you put the batteries. There is two double A batteries that need to be used for an erg. This is the wheel of the machine, it’s quite similar to a bicycle wheel in inside, and this is called the damper setting. So you can have it at really low drag, which is really light resistance, or a very high resistance. You’ll notice, that as I move it up to a higher resistance, more air can get through this portion of the machine to increase that resistance. Stay Tuned. I have wanted to start rowing for a long time, but my personal trainer has done nothing close to providing the kind of help that I got from this video series. Plus, Anna-Marie is so personable. She answers all the questions I could think to ask!
