Hi! I’m Louis Ortiz on behalf of Expert Village and today I’m going to show you how to calibrate a stick thermometer. These are thermometers used to test the doneness of certain foods and such and they go up to all varying degrees, this particular model that I have here goes from 0 to 220 degrees and a point being made that the danger zone for most foods is between 40 and 140 degrees. So with that in mind we’ve got a glass of ice water here and what we’re going to do is pull the stick thermometer out of its case and if you’ll notice there’s a hex nut on the back of this, we’re going to slide this into the case itself and this will allow us to adjust the thermometer as needed, so all we’re going to do is submerge the thermometer into the ice water and what we’re trying to hit here is 32 degrees so once we’ve hit 32 or close to it and the thermometer actually the meter starts to slow down and actually stops. We can see that this thermometer is showing 40 degrees or 39 so it’s actually a little bit off, so what I need to do is just notch it down a little so all I’m going to do is turn this as I said the back of the case is on the hex nut itself and right about there is 32 and that’s exactly where we need to be so now that we know this thermometer is calibrated it’ll give us accurate reading on the foods that we cook.
