Boxing is a combat sport in which two participants of similar weight fight each other using only their fists. Boxing today is conducted in a regulated way, usually in a series of one to three-minute intervals called rounds. A winner is determined if the opponent is knocked down and unable to get up before the referee counts to ten, or if the opponent is deemed too injured to continue. If there is no stoppage of the fight before an agreed number of rounds, a winner is determined either by the referee's decision or by the scorecards of judges.
In boxing, a fighter will rarely win without defending against the other boxer's punches. In this free video series, a boxing coach and expert will teach you how to defend against the attacks of other boxers, and how to turn this into offense with counter-punching. You'll learn how to keep the head moving, the chin down, and how to counter jabs and hooks with punches of your own. You'll also see how to avoid bigger punches and impacts through your movements. With these tips and techniques, you'll progress in your boxing training immediately!
"In this segment, we're going to be talking a little bit about counter-punching and having a good defense. We're going to be talking about how to block punches, how to push punches down. We're going to be talking about catching punches, returning punches after you've caught a punch. We're going to talk about slipping and weaving, and bobbing and dipping. A lot of times too many coaches and too many boxers try to concentrate too much on offense. The best offense is actually a good defense. So here we're going to cover a lot of counter-punching. Wherever there's an action there's a reaction. If you can counter-punch somebody, hopefully you can convince them not to do that same punch again next time, for instance. A good defense a lot of times is just being in a tight package. A good defense in amateur boxing...if someone doesn't see an opening, there's a good chance they're not going to fire at that opening. The less they fire, the less points they get. The less points they get, hopefully the more points you get. So where going to show you some counter-punching and defense."
