We are going to talk about taking leads now, and leading off. The distance you get off the base is going to depend on a couple different things. It’s going to depend on first of all, how comfortable you are the further you get away and the second thing is going to be how fast you are, how quick you can get back to the base. What you want to do on a lead is maximize the distance that you can get off the base and still get back safely and be comfortable at the same time. So you start off on the base; we are going to pretend this is first base, you are going to lead off like this. You could take one, watching the pitcher the whole time to make sure he doesn’t throw over and pick off but you could take one cross over step and then the rest of the steps need to be slide steps. So here and here. So a basic lead is going to be a cross over step, one slide step and then either another half a slide step or another whole slide step to give you a decent lead but still comfortable to where you can get back if you need to.
