we are going to teach you today how to make salt rising bread. Now for those of you who don't know what salt rising bread is it is a flat white bread that has a very fine crumb and a cheesy like flavor. It is found a lot in the Appalachian region in the United States. You can also find pockets of salt rising bread in the state of New York, Michigan, Kansas and California. Originally salt rising bread was made by pioneer women we believe all though we have not seen any conformation documentation to verify this. But we believe that it was made by pioneer women and before commercial yeast was available. We think what happened was they knew that they wanted to make bread but they didn't have any yeast of course so they found if they left a little bit of milk and flour in a vessel of some sort over night in a warm place it would grow. They knew if they added that to flour it would rise and make bread and that is how we think bread ordinated in this country.
