Series Summary

Bread has served as one of the most basic, yet essential, foodstuffs man has ever known. For centuries, even before yeast and the leavening process were discovered, bread was a large part of the diet of people of almost every civilization. It is believed that the first bread was eaten as far back as the Neolithic Era, when, through the serendipity of a happy accident, a caveman cooked water and cereal grains together. Yet this seemingly inconsequential find, a simple crust of bread, would forever change how a people survive vicious, cold winters without growing crops or animals to hunt. And bread is still one of the most widely consumed foods in the world today. As modern as we are, we still depend on bread and foods derived from bread for our daily sustenance.

In this free baking video, learn how to make your own homemade whole wheat bread. Our expert chef will walk you through this recipe step-by-step, with a list of ingredients and equipment needed, tips on how to activate the yeast, add flour, work the dough, let the bread rise, shape a twisted loaf, bake the bread, and how long to let it cool before enjoying.

Don’t forget your roots; learn how to bake bread just as a thousand others have done before you. Though technology has changed, the need to get your daily bread still remains.

"My name is Brandon Sarkis on behalf of Expert Village today I'm going to show you how to make whole wheat bread. To make our whole wheat bread we are going to need just a few things here. I got 2 cups of milk, 1/4 cup of light brown sugar (make sure its light brown sugar not dark) cause dark brown messes the recipe up, 1 tablespoon of salt (sea salt or whatever kind), 1/4 cup of melted butter, 1 cup of warm water (105-115 not hot water) cause it will kill our yeast, 2 package of active dry yeast here that is the equivalent to 4 1/2 teaspoons of dry yeast. I also have 8 cups of unsifted whole wheat flour here (a whole lot of flour) we are going to make 2 loaves out of this anyways. I also got just a stick butter here the idea for this is we are going to use this to grease the pan with when we go to make the butter or make the bread. Also we're going to use this at end and we're going to melt it down to brush the butter on top of the bread. So doing that let's move on to our equipment and see what we need to do to make everything today. "
