Series Summary

Chinese cuisine has a rich and storied tradition that is enjoyed throughout the world. In China, a meal typically consists of a starch such as noodles or rice, considered the main dish, and a vegetable or meat, considered the sides. This is contrasted with the culinary ideology of northern Europe and the United States in which the meat is usually considered the main portion of the meal. Many Chinese are also vegetarians, but not more so than in the west, and the use of chopsticks is a cultural vestige that evolved from the idea that using metal utensils is barbaric since such implements are also used as weapons.

"Hi, I'm Leah Schaefer on behalf of Expert Village. Today we're going to learn how to make Chinese steamed dumplings. One of the most popular Asian appetizers that you find in restaurants is a Chinese steamed dumpling. Now these are a little intimidating if you really don't know how to make them but most of the stuff you can find in your grocery and it's really easy to put together. The version that we're going to do today is made with pork, carrots just some great filling. So let's go ahead and talk about the ingredients for both the dumplings and just a little dipping sauce that we're going to serve on the side. Chinese dumplings also known more commonly as pot stickers are going to start out with some fresh ground pork. I bought a really lean ground pork that is a little bit healthier. But you can use whatever butcher happens to have on hand. We're going to roll it up and these dumpling wrappers that are really easy to use, they are just like dough and they roll really nicely. We have green onions, carrots, cabbage an egg to combine it all together, fresh ginger. It's really important to use the fresh ginger in here. You're going to get a whole better flavor, garlic. For the sauce we also have some green pepper, sugar it's going to flavor up the sauce along with the garlic and the ginger, we have soy sauce, sesame seed oil, balsamic vinegar for the sauce. You can use whatever kind of vinegar you have on hand but I think the balsamic vinegar really gives it a better deeper flavor. For seasoning we're just going to use some salt and pepper."
