Series Summary

Pizza may have originally come from Rome around the 3rd century BC. History mentions a very different type of food than we’re used to today, however. An ancient recipe for pizza is described as a round dough topped with olive oil and herbs. Today we put almost anything on our pizza. Tomato sauce is a key ingredient that did not emerge until sometime around the 16th century. In America, pizza did not make an appearance until the late 19th century, brought over by Italian immigrants. An interesting fact: in Chicago, pizza was introduced by a peddler who walked up and down the street selling pies by the slice.

In this free Italian food cooking class on video, learn how to make a Chicago-style deep dish pizza recipe—with a slight twist, of course. Our expert will show you the steps for making a biscuit crust pizza, complete with a meat sauce topping and fresh vegetables. Learn how to chop the vegetables and add spices and meat to make the pizza sauce recipe. Get tips on how to prepare the biscuits and lay them in the cooking tin. Learn how to add the meat sauce and how long to cook the pizza in the oven. Finally, see what your pizza should look like when it’s done.

Try this deep dish pizza recipe for a variation on a world famous food. Mangia!
