The Deep South of America serves up some of the heartiest, most delicious dishes in the world. Whether it’s a mean mustard potato salad recipe, Mom’s best baked beans, crawfish etouffee, smoked sausage, slow-cooked brisket, fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, ham hocks and beans, or country fried steak—anything that you think of as “comfort food” most likely came from somewhere near Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, or South Carolina.
Perhaps Southern recipes were developed with the idea of a large group of friends or family in mind, since they are often served at picnics, backyard cookouts, family reunions, and tailgate parties. Perhaps it’s the very nature of the people who inhabit the South, people known for their qualities of courtesy, hospitality and kindness, which has somehow made its way into much of Southern cooking, infusing it with the flavors of love and kindness… and a taste of home.
In these Southern cooking classes on video, learn how to make a white bean soup recipe with ham hocks and homemade cornbread. Our expert chef, David Postada, will walk you through both of these recipes step-by-step, with tips on how to inspect and soak the beans, how to cook the ham hocks, how to make the cornbread batter and bake the cornbread, how to remove ham from the hock, and how to garnish this delicious dish and serve. Enjoy.
