"Hi! I'm Jennifer Cail and on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to show you how to make sweet potatoes. Now, I've been talking about sweet potatoes, however, most people know the Thanksgiving dessert at candied yams. What's the difference between sweet potatoes and yams? Well actually, there's a big difference between sweet potatoes and yams. For the most part, yams can not be found in the United States. They're a different type of tuber from Africa. Whereas the sweet potatoes are a tuber indigenous to the United States and point south. The biggest difference between what is called yams and sweet potatoes in the United States is the color of the flesh. Yams are usually darker fleshed, whereas sweet potatoes can be lighter fleshed. Sweet potatoes can go from white flesh to purple flesh, but the majority of that are eaten in the United States. Other than just eating, sweet potatoes can be used for various of different things. Of course, one of the biggest uses is for animal fodder, which basically means animal feed. Another use for sweet potatoes is in south America in native American tribes down there. Sweet potatoes are used for dyes for various different articles of clothing and blankets. Another use for sweet potatoes in industrial use. Industrial alcohols can be made. Another thing that sweet potatoes in consumptive matter is the sweet potatoes themselves, the plants, can be dried and then pounded into flour. This can be used as flour substitute, such as for people with celiac disease who can not digest flour. Another use for sweet potatoes is not the potato itself, but rather the leaves. The leaves can be used for various medicinal purposes, including treating diabetes and also hemorrhaging."
