Hi! My name is Eddie Leal; I’m the Brew Master here at Steelhead Brewing Company in Irvine, California, and we’re going to be talking about the difference between professional brewing and home brewing. I myself started of as a home brewer, so I pretty much know the process and the differences. There’s actually not much difference between a home brewer and a professional brewer. The main difference is the scale that you’re brewing. Home brewers are brewing 5 gallon batches, compared to us, we’re brewing 465 gallon batches, which is probably one of the main differences. Depending on how sophisticated your home brewing is, you can pretty much brew exactly like we do here, professionally. Some home will do all grain brewing just like we do. We do all grain brewing of course here. Some home brewers that aren’t as sophisticated use others. They won’t go all grain but they’ll use other substances to make it a little bit easier on the process. I myself, when I was home brewing, basically made my own equipment. I made them out of kegs, basically, where I cut a keg in half to make into a brew kettle myself and welded the parts that I needed on it. I also turned anther keg into a mashed ton where I put a screen on the bottom to filter the grain from when we extracted the wort. There are some differences; it all depends on how sophisticated your system is at home. I know home brewers that pretty much do all grain brewing and do the exact same process that we do here. It’s just like I said, all depends on the type of equipment that you use, how sophisticated you are in your equipment. The more you put into it, the better quality of beer you’re going to get out of it too.
