"Hi I'm Karen for Expert Village, while our cake is baking we are going to wipe up some frosting. We are going to use a basic butter cream frosting and we would be using 4 cups of confectioner sugar, 1/2 cup of shorten, a 1/2 cup of margarine, a teaspoon of vanilla and about 2 tablespoons of milk and a little extra milk just encase the frosting is to thick. Again I would be substituting soy milk for the milk. Okay we would start by putting in the shorten and the margarine and we would beat that up until it is smooth. Now if you don't want to use shorten you can use all margarine but shorten is really the best ingredient to use for the butter cream frosting it gives a nice and smooth spreadable frosting. "
