Series Summary

Homemade pumpkin pie is one of several traditional North American desserts served during Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. It is usually made from a pumpkin custard based filling, and seasoned with nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and ginger. Pumpkin pie is baked in a single pie shell, and occasionally topped with pie toppers and whipped cream. Just the smell of a freshly baked pie wafting through the house is sure to invoke fond memories of family gatherings where you eat way, way too much food and then promptly fall asleep on the couch.

In this holiday desserts cooking class, learn how to make a homemade pecan pumpkin pie recipe from scratch. Our expert baker will show you how to do it all, from ingredients and utensils to the finished product. She’ll show you how to roll the pie crust dough and shape it, how to cook a squash and remove the flesh (now that’s fresh), what spices to add, how to make the pecan filling, how to put everything together and bake the pie, and even how to make your own whipped cream. This is the ultimate Thanksgiving or Christmas dessert recipe for anyone who’s looking for something beyond the store-bought experience. Happy Holidays!

"This is Mary Murphy and you are watching Expert Village. Now let's look at the utensils you will need to bake this pie. Make it and bake it. The utensils you will need is a rolling pin to roll out the crust when it is prepared. You will need measuring cups, a one cup and a half cup. You will need a pie plate. Either a glass pie plate or a ceramic pie plate. I prefer a ceramic pie plate. I think it makes for a much nicer crust. And I usually use a crust protectant, that when I've got it all made I put this on top of the crust to keep the crust from burning. You will need a bowl to mix your crust in and also your ingredients and a pastry cutter. You will need a blender if you like to make your pumpkin pie a real smooth texture. You can make it in a bowl if you don't have a blender. You will also need some measuring spoons for the spices that go in to the pie fillings. A knife helps to clean off the pastry cutter. A spoon to scrape out the seeds for the squash and then of course you need a good knife to cut through the squash. But, these would not be necessary if you are buying a can of pumpkin at the store."
