" Hi I'm Karen for Expert Village now I would show you how to make our pie crust by hand. Here is our 2 1/4 cup of flour and 1/2 a teaspoon of salt that has been chilled in the freezer. Pour that right in there. Here is a 1/4 cup of margarine that has also been chilled in the freezer. I'm just going to chop that up a bit to get started see how nice and hard it is chop up into small pieces so it is a little bit easier once we get in our bowl. Then scrap that in, this is a 1/2 cup of shorten that has also been in the freezer for about 10 minutes to get it nice and cold. We just get that started by chopping, shorten is alot softer then margarine. Now we put that in there. I'm going to use a pastry cutter to cut the margarine and the butter into the flour. Just cut that in there and keep moving and kind of twist as you are doing it. I will show you another technique if you dont have a pastry cutter. You have to work quickly and not handle the butter to much but you just kind of squeeze and pinch and kind of rub the margarine and the shorten into the flour. You can go like this and you are trying to just trying to coat gobbles of margarine and shorten with flour without warming up the mixture to much. Let me finish up with a pastry cutter it is alot quicker. Just keep cutting in there and see the margarine is getting smaller and smaller bits. Keeping it crumby and just work that margarine and flour in. You are trying to get little pea size pieces so we will just keep cutting. Mix up from the bottom once in the a while you see how it is getting smaller. That looks pretty good, break up a little bit, that looks pretty good. "
