Series Summary

Coming from the back roads of America after the second world war, drag racing's roots were planted on dry lake beds like those found in the Mojave Desert, where hot rodders had come since the early 1930s to satisfy their need...their need for speed! One could even argue that drag racing was born with Wally Parks, who nearly four decades after his birth in 1913 would found drag racing's most successful and influential sanctioning body. But ultimately the heart and soul of racing lies within the the daredevil spirit of the human heart.

In this free video series, our expert Tina Stull will tell you everything you need to know about drag racing and racing in the NHRA. She will tell you about racing sponsors, promoting yourself, and promotional products and support groups. She will also tell you about selling your racing program, driver cards, and staging the track. She will even talk about making adjustments to your car, qualifying runs, the 890 & 990 indexes, practicing seat time, and how to get a good start off the starting line. Racing classes will also be an important subject including top dragsters, super comp, comp eliminator, and super street. Finally Tina will teach you about having balance between your racing life and your home life so your family never suffers for your insatiable lust for speed!

"TINA STULL: Hi, I'm Tina Stull and I drive the Top Dragster for Interstate Batteries. On behalf of Expert Village, today, we're going to talk about the basics of racing. Things to consider, everybody. I get a lot of questions about how do you get sponsorship and they--I have a full-time sponsor. I do this full time. This is my job. And it sounds like, "God, that's great. Someone gives you money, you get to go racing." There are a lot of things to consider with that. I was looking at my schedule and in January, the start of the year, I haven't really booked everything but just off of what I've done so far, we're looking at 72 days of racing and 48 days of either doing appearances or work for the sponsors. So really, it begins to take a big chunk out of your life and that's not even considering days that would normally be counted travelling to and from. So there's a huge commitment on that. Fortunately for me, I get to take my daughter along with me, but if I have to take all those days and be away from home, we're easily looking at 125 days just right there that I would be away from home. So there's a point where when you switch over from doing it as a hobby and for fun to trying to do it professionally, there is a real shift in how that you look at the sport. And so sometimes my advice is that sponsorship isn't for everybody because a lot of the--almost the third of the time that I'm spending in the sport is actually spending outside of the sport. So when you look at the benefits of getting backing from companies, you also need to look at the responsibilities that go along with that."
