Series Summary

The classic Greek salad, sometimes called a “village salad”, in its traditional form consists of chopped tomato, cucumbers, bell pepper and red onion, and sometimes baby spinach, and seasoned with salt, pepper, oregano and olive oil. Some recipes also call for feta, capers and kalamata olives. In the United States and UK a Greek salad is a lettuce based salad with classic Greek ingredients like feta cheese, olives and tomatoes and topped with oil and vinegar. Some recipes also use cucumbers, bell peppers, onions, radishes, pepperoncini and sometimes beets.

In this series of free cooking videos you'll learn how to make a Greek salad. Expert Karen Weisman demonstrates the process step by step, showing you what ingredients you'll need, how to wash and dry the greens, and how to put together the ingredients. She also demonstrates how to make variations on Greek salad dressing, like an oregano dressing, sun-dried tomato dressing, and the classic Greek scald dressing.

"today I'll be showing you how to make 3 different Greek dressings and one salad that's can serve a dinner of 8 to 10 people. And one layered Greek salad that can serve a crowd. These are the ingredients we'll be using these are the basic ingredients for a Greek salad you'll have some nice crisp green you can use, this is roman you can use a curly leaf lettuce or red lettuce. Even spinach you can use usually a crisp green usually have tomatoes, some kind of an onion I'm using green onion, red onion is also very good. Usually some kind of a vegetable typically cucumber but green pepper is also used also kalamata olives are a staple for the Greek salad, it's a special Greek olive. And of course fetish cheese that's the main flavor in the Greek salad now the fetish cheese is a tangy cheese it's hard and crumbly. It's packed up in a brine so it's salty and it's usually made from sheep's milk or goats milk but it can also be made from cows milk. Now the sheep milk and goats milk varieties are the traditional thing that you would find in Greece. Since Greece is an island and it's to small to support cattle that you would need for cows milk."
