Today we know that many of the pesticides, fertilizers, and treatments used in commercial and home agriculture are hazardous to the environment. They can drain all the nutrients from the soil and poison any insects living there, rendering the land dead and stagnant. Cattle are often treated with hormones to produce more milk or larger muscles, and many of them are bombarded by pesticides and chemicals from the grass and feed they eat regularly. Gardening and lawn care, done with special attention to pesticide and fertilizer application, can be an effective way of minimizing our detrimental effect on the environment.
In this free video series, our expert Travis Steglich will talk about using lawn dusters for spreading pesticides and fertilizers. He'll show you the functions of dusters, how to load the hopper, how to get proper coverage with your duster, and how to deal with drift. He'll even give you a demonstration of a common fan assisted lawn duster.
"To some of the dust all you need to do is open up the container that it comes in. It's basically three pieces you got the barrel which is a tube that concentrates the air in the dust. Then you have the main body assembly which has the hopper and the fan enclosed. Then the handle all you have to have is a Phillips screwdriver that I happen to have on hand. You attach that handle by screwing it down and put the barrel on and what happens is the dust goes in the hopper, it's sifted through a flour sifter, it goes into the blaster where it's created by a fan when you crank the handle. Then it blows the mixture of air and dust out of the nozzle."
