The Importance of Slow & Steady Plant Growth

" On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Craig Morrell. I'm with Landscape Restorations in Miami, Florida. We're here at Palm Hammock Orchid Estate and we're talking about planting, and fertilizing. The title of this clip is that speed is dangerous. As with so many things in life, you pay for speed. Be aware of those plants that are marketed to you as being fast growing or instant landscaping. You see this a lot in catalogs. Sometimes you'll see them online. If you see a tree that's being marketed as being fast growing, at least do your homework. And here's a good example, is a royal palm planted next to a driveway. These plants will be 50, 60, 80, even 100 feet tall. Another good example, especially in the subtropics, are these umbrella trees. Extremely fast growing. Sometimes 15 or 20 feet per year. Fast growing means shallow rooted, very thirsty, brittle wood. Those 3 combinations are very dangerous, especially is storm areas. "
