How to Back Fill the Plant Hole When Gardening

" On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Craig Morrell. I'm with Landscape Restorations in Miami, Florida. We're here at Palm Hammock Orchid Estate and we're talking about planting, and fertilizing. This video is about the actual business of putting the plants in the planting hole. And one of the best ideas in most parts of the country is to amend the back fill. In other words, add some organic material to the soil. In this case, we're really lucky. We've actually got real soil here in Dade county, which is really rare. Usually it's pure coral rock. You can mix in compost, peat moss, and in some cases cypress mulch. Something to enrich the soil to get the plant off to a good start. And we're going to add a slow release fertilizer to make sure the plant gets going. In this case, I'm going to be using some 13-13-13 dynamite, which is a 6 month fertilizer. We'll mix some into the soil to make sure that the plant gets going. About 3 tablespoons for a small plant mixed into the soil to make sure it's good and rich. Then we'll put the plant right on top of the fertilizer like that. Then we'll ready to put in the back fill. "
