Testing a New Lawn Mower Starter

"Now the last thing I want to tell you about is just make sure you test the starter before you reinstall it. Some of the starters you're going to find, you have to open the entire machine to get to the starter. So what you want to do is make sure the starter is working perfectly before you reassemble the entire machine. On a Briggs and Stratton starters with a start clutch, its fairly simple. You make sure that you've got good pull back, its not rubbing, its not going to stick and its held in well, the pulley is held in well. On your pawl type starters, you want to pull them slowly and if the pawls come out when its being pulled slowly, you know its going to work when its pulled quicker. Same thing on all your starters. Any kind of starter you've got. Pull it slowly, if the pawls come out then, you know you've done a good job."
