Hi, I'm Stan Defreitas - Mr. Green Thumb. One of the plants that we have that I think is really an outstanding plant is that of the Shrimp Plant, Bellpurina Gutatta. The Shrimp Plant, well it looks like - you can see where the name came from - it looks like a shrimp! And, it's one of those novelty-type plants. But it's also a toughie. It doesn't have many insects; it doesn't have many fungus problems. So it's a good plant, it' a good choice, for you when you're backyard gardening. It's also the one that your neighbors and friends and relatives are going to say, "Oh! It really does look like a shrimp!" And it does. It's one of those plants that will do well in full sun to partial shade. You want to make sure that you put it into a pretty organic soil, so peat, cow manure, really improve the soil. Make a ten dollar hole for your ten dollar plant, and this plant should last a good long time. It's not real cold hardy, so if you get anything near freezing, get your covers over and protect it. In really cold areas, I'd actually probably dig it up every fall, put it in a protected site, and then bring it back in the spring and summer. The Shrimp Plant's a good addition to your landscape. For on gardening, I'm Stan Freitas - Mr. Green Thumb.
