Most of the old chairs we work with will have glue blocks in them. These are the blocks we're talking about, they're put in with glue and usually sometimes nails sometimes screws. Screws are obviously than nails and nails are better than just blocks and glue. The glue blocks serve two purposes, they tie the two side rails to the back part of the chair together and give it a lot more strength. For some reason people want to lean back in a chair all the time and it just reinforces the joint, it gives it more strength. Sometimes you'll have them in the front sometimes not but if they're in the front, same process we're going to do in the back so I'll show you how to remove these and clean them and get them ready to re-apply after we re-glue the chair. They have to come out, that's the first thing that has to be removed because we can't take the chair apart with these glue blocks in here. These are Phillip head screw also so we're just going to go back those screws out. There's a little bit of glue residue, usually a little pop and it'll come right out. Sometimes the blocks are really loose and they'll just fall out sometimes they're really stubborn and you may have to stick a chisel in there to get them to come out. You can see the old glue residue in here and that's what we got to scrape off. We also want to scrape it off on the part of the chair where it's going to be re-attached. Once we get these blocks off we want to keep them separated. It's a good idea also before you take the blocks off, to mark them with your tape also, put your tape marks on it or just write on pencil on top because your seat cover is going to cover this. If you know where they're at now you know the upside is the number where you've written on it and also which side it's on. So we'll set those aside for now and start on the next process.
