So first you position the jack stands in the approximate area where they will be sitting and then you adjust the height. Get the height approximately how you want it and then put the pins through there and that will hold this adjustable part of the jack stand in place at the proper height so that you can set the hydraulic floor jack onto the jack stands and they will support the weight of the vehicle while you're working under it.
