How to Scuff Old Clear Coat to Apply New Clear Coat

"Hi, I'm Doug I work with 20 great guys in St. Louis at Doug Jenkins Custom Hot Rods and we are going to do some work for your today on Expert Village. As part of the chip repair you have to prepare the entire piece for clear coat in order to that you scuff up the clear coat so the new clear cut would stick to the old. This does not change the color of the piece. You are not damaging the color this is only a superficial sanding so that the clear coat would stick. You can not paint a shiny surface it has to be slightly dual. So he is using very fine sand paper to rough up the surface in general. For the heavier repairs you use heavier sand paper but when you are just scuffing up clear coat you use about 1000 grit sand paper. You not trying to take any series kind of material off you are just trying to get it so it is not so shiny any more. You want to be careful not to sand to aggressively on the corners or you can go right through the clear and damage the color. Dan is being very careful to just get thing scuff not to take any material off. After you have done your sanding of the filler if you have done a really good job you want to use a little hard block or use your thumb. You want it to be sanded nice and smooth like this. You should not be able to feel anything, if you can feel something you have not done it right. It needs to be nice and smooth it is very hard to fill a small chip like that not be able to feel it. "
