How to Install the Differential Cover

"DOUG JENKINS: Hi. I'm Doug. I work with 20 great guys in St. Louis at Doug Jenkins Custom Hot Rods and we're going to do some work for you today on Expert Village. Mark got the inside of this all clean, got all the old gasket and old sealant off of there and wiped it out really carefully before he went to put it on. There's no need to spread the silicone around with your fingers and make a big mess. If you put a bead in there about the size that Mark did, it'll push out around the edges just a little bit just to show you, you got a seal. If you want to sound smart to your friends, this is a 12-bolt posi rear end. The posi we showed you when we had the diff covered off of there, the 12-bolt just refers to the number of bolts it takes to retain the cover that Mark's installing now. It's a gross way to describe a rear axle, but it works. The number of bolts he used to put on a cover doesn't make it any stronger, of course, but the larger axles take more bolts. So this is considered a deluxe axle for a car. Mark is freeing up the vent here. The differential always has a vent on it 'cause the oil expands and you want to get the air in and out. So whenever you do any work on a differential, just wiggle the vent a little bit and make sure there's no junk clogging it up."
