"DOUG JENKINS: Hi, I'm Doug. I work with 20 great guys in St. Louis at Doug Jenkins Custom Hot Rods and we're going to do some work for you today on Expert Village. Big impact gun going on there. Just because it's handy, you don't need to tighten these ball joint retaining nuts too much. You see that they're, he stopped real quick once the gun got there and then held this--hit the trigger a few times on the impact gun to line up the pin hole in the ball joint stud and the groove on the top of castellated nut so he can get the cotter pin in there. So he sticks the cotter pin, bends it over, and clips it off. The proper use of the cotter key is to take one part of the key and bend it over the top of the nut and then trim the other part of the key off. The same thing with the upper, he's using the impact gun just 'cause it's convenient. You're not wanting to retighten this nut super tight; they're really easy to stretch. If you go too far on the thing, your cotter pin won't do any good, you've stretched the ball joint, and you're in a dangerous situation. So he takes a look there and he's gotta turn the nut just a little bit further to line up one of the castellations with the hole and the ball joint stud."
