"Hi, I'm Mark Blocker on behalf of Expert Village. On this segment I'll show you what jumper cables are, primarily how they're made and what they are consist of and how to select a good set, and what to look for. Jumper cables are broken down and primarily they consist of 2 cables and 2 sets of connectors. The red connectors are for positive. The black connectors are for negative. All the automotive systems are primarily color coded in that format. So you want to make sure you're connecting red to positive on both vehicles and black to negative on both vehicles. When selecting a set of jumper cables, you want to get the lowest gage wire possible, primarily a 4 gage wire or 6 gage wire and you want to get them as long as possible, at least 12 feet long. So you'll have long enough cables to jump in a variety of situations. Quite commonly you can be parked in a parking lot and standard 6 or 8 feet cables won't be able to reach."
