"DOUG JENKINS: Hi, I'm Doug. I work with twenty great guys in St. Louis at Doug Jenkins Custom Hot Rods, and we're going to do some work for you today on Expert Village. To the original style of steering on this kind of a hot rod, 'cause this car here is virtually the same era as that one. This is the kind of frame that cars like that had when they were new. The steering column would come into here and turn similarly--there's 2 gears in here and they turn together, and it moves this arm forward and backward. It's kind of rusty and hard to move. So that--so this would move fore and aft, pulling and pushing this rod which would pull the wheels left and right. When you go over a bump, you'd end up--if you hit one wheel with a bump, it would have an affect on the other wheel and it would cause 'em both to steer awkwardly. But this was, you know, very early production cars and they work for a long time. But the modern one that we're doing over there is just a lot safer. You know, and you can tell a hot rod like that, we're not talking 40 miles an hour, parallel parking next to a horse and buggy."
