Tips for Reinstalling Car Thermostat

"NATHAN MCCULLOUGH: Hi. My name is Nate McCullough on behalf of Expert Village. In these clips, we're going to talk about the proper way to remove and replace your vehicle's thermostat. In this clip, we're going to talk about surface preparation and reinstalling of the seal on your thermostat. As you can see right here, I have a razor blade which I'm going to use for surface preparation. I have my new thermostat, my coolant seal, and my housing. The first thing I'm going to do is take and slip my new gasket onto my thermostat. There are several different styles of gaskets. This one happens to be the rubber one. On your vehicle, it may have a sponge metal or a cardboard style or felt gasket. If that's the case, it is going to go on the outside of the gasket and it's not going to encapsulate the ring around it like this one does. We got our seal seated on our thermostat. As you can see, this is my thermostat housing and we have some corrosion and some gooey nastiness developed around here. What I'm going to do is take and use our razor blade to scrape off that stuff. And that is proper cleaning for your new thermostat housing."
